Carrick-on-Shannon Heritage Group

In 2003, Carrick on Shannon Heritage Group was established. A group of volunteers came together with a common interest to preserve and restore Carrick on Shannon’s heritage and cultural fabric for current and future generations. To date, the group has successfully identified and developed a number of heritage sites in partnership with a variety of statutory and non statutory bodies.

The group continues to manage these sites as heritage attractions and facilities available for community use. The Heritage Group has further developed a Literary Heritage at St George’s Heritage and Visitor Centre with the erection of a bust to Susan Langstaff Mitchell in 2017 and a wall mural depicting five of Leitrim’s literary figures.

Carrick on Shannon Heritage Group Ltd has successfully restored and is maintaining the following:

  • St George’s Church which is now a Heritage and Visitor centre and the renovation of the second oldest organ in Ireland, the Telford Organ.
  • The restoration of Plagemann’s painting ” The Adoration of the Shepherds”
  • Costello Memorial Chapel.
  • The Workhouse Attic.
  • The Famine Garden of Remembrance.
  • A Sensory Garden.
